About Girlguiding Manchester

About Us

Who We Are

We are Girlguiding Manchester. Through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure we empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. We encourage our 3000 members to give new challenges and adventures a go. Whether that's camping, canoeing, grass sledging, swimming or pioneering. Our amazing volunteers have a brilliant time too - learning new skills, being role models and making friends for life. But with girls on our waiting lists, we still need more people to join. Whoever you are, wherever you're from - everyone is welcome.

Rainbows

Ages 4-7 Toggle Accordion

Rainbows is our section for girls aged 4 to 7. Rainbows is all about developing self-confidence, building friendships, learning new things and having fun. Girls get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, try out cooking and play games. Rainbows is all about learning by doing.

Rainbows follow a programme called the Rainbow Jigsaw, through which they can take part in lots of different activities with other girls their own age.

Brownies

Ages 7-10 Toggle Accordion

Brownies is our section for girls aged 7 to 10. Through regular meetings, special events, day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays, Brownies learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors. Girls can also extend their knowledge and abilities by working towards Brownie Interest Badges covering many different hobbies and activities from Science investigator to Circus skills.

Brownies become a member of a ‘Six’, a unit with a name such as Badger, Fox, Mole, Squirrel, Hedgehog or Rabbit, and follow a programme called the Brownie Adventure. The name reflects the world of exciting opportunities, challenges and fun that is Brownies.

Guides

Ages 10-14 Toggle Accordion

Guides is our section for girls aged 10 to 14. By becoming part of a worldwide community of girls who learn together and share skills and experiences, Guides have the chance to get out there and do something really different.

Members take part in a wide range of exciting activities at their regular meetings, and at special events or holidays. Girls can get involved in anything from adventure sports to performing arts, travel and taking part in community action projects.

Guides work together in small groups or ‘Patrols’ and, with the support of an adult Leader, choose and run some of the activities themselves using resource packs.

Rangers

Ages 14-18 Toggle Accordion

Rangers is for young women aged 14 to 18. Rangers can choose from a wide range of unique and exciting opportunities, including travel in the UK and around the world, volunteering with younger girls within Girlguiding as a Mentors or Leaders, and working towards valuable qualifications. Rangers have a varied and flexible programme with a huge variety of challenges and opportunities for personal development.

The programme offers a range of activities and challenges that motivate members to try out new things – it could be learning a language, playing a musical instrument, running a marathon, camping in the wild or volunteering overseas. It is flexible and participants can take their chosen activities as far as they wish, from taster level all the way to gaining a qualification that is recognised outside of guiding.
