Lunch with the Duchess of Cornwall for Rona

Huge congratulations to our County Commissioner Rona Rommel who is today having lunch with The Duchess of Cornwall.  She has been selected as a Platinum Champion in the Royal Voluntary Service awards.  Rona was chosen from over 3000 nominations which were whittled down to 490 Platinum Champions.  In additional Rona was selected by an expert panel of judges as one of the 70 Platinum Champions invited to the Platinum Party at the Palace in London (which she was unable to attend) and also to the Eden Project’s Big Jubilee Lunch in London today, Sunday 5th June.

Rona was nominated not only for 30 years of outstanding service to Girlguiding but for her role in leading the County through the pandemic.  Rona took the role only a few days before the first lockdown and steered members through the myriad of changes that ensued over the following two years,

Rona received a specially designed, official Platinum Champions pin and a signed certificate from Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall at the lunch.

Speaking after the lunch Rona said “I feel extremely honoured to have been nominated for this award let alone to have been selected.  I love volunteering with Girlguiding and taking on the role of County Commissioner at the start of the pandemic was a real challenge without the ability to get out and about a meet people.  It’s been a pleasure to lead the county through this most difficult time and to see unit meetings getting underway and residentials start up again.  Our amazing leaders have not sat still during this time, working hard to complete mandatory trainings and ensure that girls and young women have a safe environment to thrive once they were back in action.

I’m looking forward to the rest of my term of office and getting to meet more of our lovely volunteers.

I take this award for every one of you that delivers guiding week in week out.
